Our Notes

“Toilworn, they reach’d that welcome light, / And told their harrowing tale [. . .]” - George French Angas’s bold shipwreck-escaping sailors in the poem that inspired the name and label of this “Lighthouse Keeper” Riesling could only dream of being this beautifully dry.

Long and lithe with lemon and lime, not just the fruits but the flowers, maybe even a little candied lemon on the nose. All this with the trademark minerality of a well-executed SA Riesling.

Winemakers Comments

Average Riesling yields and a warm summer ensured a perfect lead up to harvest. Dry conditions with warm days and cool evenings characterised the ripening period. These conditions provided for a good balance of ripe flavours and the retention of natural acidity. 100% whole-bunch and berry pressed. Naturally cold settled prior to racking clear to begin fermentation. The wine was fermented cool between 13-16C for 2 weeks before finishing up sugar-dry. Then matured for 3 months on yeast lees with the occasional stirring before being naturally clarified before bottling.

Lifted citrus aromas of lemon blossom, melons and peeled limes, underpinned by a fleshy palate, finishing with a crisp and crunchy acidity. Approachable upon release this wine will mature very well for the medium to long term.

About the Winery

Aussie success-story enterprise Brave Souls was founded by young German-born and internationally-educated winemaker Julia Weirich, who in 2017 may have picked just the right time to begin work in the Barossa.

The “Brave Souls” label celebrates those who risked their lives for the rescue effort during the 1859 shipwreck of the passenger steamship SS Admella, one of Australia’s worst-ever maritime disasters.

A most drinkable pinot gris with a slightly sweeter flavour without the harsher overtones of similar products.

19 crimes wines

I have found 19 crimes wines to be exceptional wines. Especially the Savignon Block and Cali Rose. I have only recently started drinking these wines but feel they are different than most other brands Ihave tried. I will be buying only these 2 wines in the near future.
