What the Experts Say

(Review is of the 2016 vintage.)

Cracking example of pinot grigio. From the King Valley’s premier producer.

For starters, it’s in the true grigio style. The flavours have a crunch to them, it’s unafraid of acidity, and it crackles out through the finish with assorted spice and pebble-like characters. Between times it’s all green/red apple and dry pear, appropriately measured. Unlike a lot of grigio going around, it doesn’t try too hard. It gets on with things.

91/100 - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Our Notes

“Nashi pear, bright, lemony zest” reads the label, and it’s hard to disagree that this grigio delivers just that. There’s more to it, though, from the appealingly aromatic presentation (yuzu and Granny Smith on the nose, maybe? Jasmine?) to a firmly fruit body that evokes lemon juice as much as it does zest.

Cries out for a grazing situation, if you ask me - tapas, antipasti, sushi platter or an izakaya-y sort of affair, anything like that.

Winemakers Comments

This crisp and refreshing Pinot Grigio has abundant apple and pear characteristics with subtle little lemon and lime to enhance the bright textural palate. It has great depth and crunchy acid all the way through.

The Pinot Grigio was harvested at four different stages and levels of ripeness to help build complexity of flavour. The juice was drained off the skins right then left to settle for 24 hours before racking and then fermentation. A yeast strain was used to ensure maximum extraction of varietal characters, while fermentation temperatures were kept low to capture freshness and aromatics.

About the Winery

Winemaking duo Fred and Katrina Pizzini, formerly well-respected grapegrowers for a variety of labels, have more recently brought their name and their sizeable vineyards to the Pizzini brand. Pizzini's wines are made with a focus on varietal character, with Italian varieties and styles being a particular focus.

Didn't survive the transport

The Champagne survived, but one of the glasses was cracked when it arrived. Since they cost as much as the wine it is a poor investment.

Blast from the past!

I’d forgotten how delicious this wine is - for some reason we can’t buy it any more at any of our liquor outlets in Brisbane. Had to go online to find it. Very happy now!
