What the Experts Say

Katnook Estate Chardonnay has become more refined over the years, more about the fruit than the oak, but it still offers a decent serve of stone fruit flavour. Nectarine-like flavours predominantly though there are peach and nashi pear characters too. It’s not an easy wine to get excited over but it’s fresh, giving and well-honed.

89/100 - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Our Notes

From a gorgeous vintage in the Coonawarra, not usually associated with white wines, this “Founder’s Block” Chardonnay pours a rich straw yellow and displays notes of peach, melon and lime zest with subtle and creamy oak smoothness and a long finish. Not so much a classic “big” Chardonnay - if oak and butter put you off, you might like this one more than you expect.

Try this one with roast chicken, perhaps, or a rich and creamy dish in an Italian style with white meat or vegetables.

Winemakers Comments

2018 was an ideal vintage in Coonawarra. Harvest started slightly earlier; good rainfall in the leadup followed by a warmer and drier season than usual, produced outstanding Chardonnay fruit exhibiting excellent varietal expression.

About the Winery

While the oldest vines used by Katnook Estate today were planted in 1971, the winery’s rich history extends almost a century before that to winemaker John Riddoch seeing Coonawarra’s potential and producing his first vintage in 1895.

Katnook’s historic “woolshed” barrel room actually began as a winemaking facility; it gained that name when brandy and fortified wines were popular in Australia, hurting the profitability of the powerful low-yield reds Coonawarra is best suited to and seeing the winery converted into a sheep station.

Didn't survive the transport

The Champagne survived, but one of the glasses was cracked when it arrived. Since they cost as much as the wine it is a poor investment.

Blast from the past!

I’d forgotten how delicious this wine is - for some reason we can’t buy it any more at any of our liquor outlets in Brisbane. Had to go online to find it. Very happy now!
