What the Experts Say

(Review is of the 2017 vintage)

If the 2016 release was anything to go by then the grapes were sourced from a number of Barossa Valley vineyards, the vine ages ranging from 15 to 100+ years.

Such a juicy wine. Simple maybe but highly effective. Redcurrant and raspberry, sweet spices and anise. Everything flows, everything feels hydrated and refreshed. Super tasty. Excellent drinking.

92/100 - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Our Notes

Crimson red and youthful, this juicy “Able Seaman” GSM  is a smooth and elegant Barossa Valley blend from up-and-coming label Brave Souls uses fruit from some seriously old vines and shows red fruit, anise and spices on the palate with subtle, silky tannins.

Lighter than the alcohol percentage suggests, and as enjoyable on its own as it is with food.

Winemakers Comments

Grenache 46%, Shiraz 29%, Mourvèdre 25%.

Blending not only three different varieties, but also three different subregions of the Barossa, the wine truly speaks of its origin: Our Grenache comes from the Roland Flat in the Southern end of the Barossa, where our Shiraz vineyard is located on the warmer Western Ridge, perfect for growing fleshy and rounded style Shiraz. Red Terra Rossa soils are giving their characteristics to Mourvèdre, which is sourced from the Light Pass.

The Grenache was handpicked and predominantly destemmed, with 20% of whole bunch contribution. Both Shiraz and Mourvèdre were fully destemmed. Each varietal vineyard was processed and fermented separately. After a cold soak period of 5 days the fermenters were allowed to naturally warm up to start fermentation. Hand plunged daily for 22 days and pressed off at dryness to a range of seasoned oak barrels. The vineyards were matured separately for 10 months before being blended, naturally clarified and bottled. The diversity of fermentation techniques, together with the vineyard selection, assisted in building complexity and layers of flavour within the blended wine.

Crimson red in colour, with lifted youthful redberry, cinnamon and anise spice aromas. A delicious, fleshy and rounded Grenache based wine with silky tannins and texture. A wine approachable upon release, but - like all pedigree GSM wines - has the ability to mature well for the medium to longer term.

About the Winery

Aussie success-story enterprise Brave Souls was founded by young German-born and internationally-educated winemaker Julia Weirich, who in 2017 may have picked just the right time to begin work in the Barossa.

The “Brave Souls” label celebrates those who risked their lives for the rescue effort during the 1859 shipwreck of the passenger steamship SS Admella, one of Australia’s worst-ever maritime disasters.

19 crimes

Although the 19 crimes blend is by far my favourite, I was keen to try the whole Red series, The Shiraz was very nice and I would definitely recommend this and the other 19 crimes to anyone 🙃
